IssueTrackerProduct 0.6.1 finally released

The long awaited next major IssueTrackerProduct is finally released. Along it comes a completely new website that will from now on be this projects home.

The 0.6.1 version is a major improvement since the last released version (0.5.2). Lots of existing code and templates have been rewritten and/or cleaned. The major new features are almost only based on the results of the IssueTrackerProduct Survey results

What a lot of people asked for was:

  • ability to change the look&feel
This has been solved; and with style. CheckoutableTemplates can now be used which means that you can easily check out selected templates and make your deviations per instance (e.g. your own changes to standard.css) without making it difficult to upgrade to newer versions and without having filesystem access.
  • ability to assign issues to users
The 0.6.1 version introduces a new object called Issue Tracker User Folder which supercedes the default Zope User Folder object. With this installed you'll be able to assign issues to people defined in these new user folders.
  • easier properties management
A brand new (non-buggy) Properties Wizard has been added which can be used not only when you first create an instance.
  • new improved filter
When listing issues you can now choose if you want to "Show only..." or "Do not show...". The selection process for the filters is also much improved. You can also search within (or temporarily outside) the filters that you apply.

Some other major improvments:

  • XHTML 1.0 Transitional compatible and Web Standards
The XHTML produced is now near valid XML which means it'll more likely work in all browsers on all operating systems. Layout is now controlled by stylesheets instead of clunky HTML tables. This will make it considerably much easier to redesign the layout and look&feel to anything. It also makes it possible to define stylesheets that are suitable for print and for mobile phones.
  • much much faster rendering
The Python code and the Page Template code has been profiled and optimised to render stuff much faster. A major improvement was that, before, listing issues was actually made as a ZCatalog search with a emptystring searchterm. The XHTML has been optimised to send much smaller webpages across the network. This also makes the browser rendering much faster. In total the speed improvement generally is about 50% faster on many pages!!
  • default sort by creation time
Now you can (in the Properties) select whether you want to sort by modification time or creation time. Adding a followup or changing the status of an issue makes it go to the top of the list if the default sort order is by modification time. If you change it to creation time only the latest addition of issues will appear at the top of the list. (we at my company have made this switch). The default behaviour is still the old way for backwards compatability.
  • image file attachments shows thumbnails
Wasn't a showstopper without but this actually makes a lot of sense when attaching images which I find in all honesty happens quite often.
  • new and improved hyperlink rendering of text
Thanks to a new addhrefs what is links become hyperlinks in the text in issues. The old one was very buggy.
  • Last but not least, a shitload of bugs fixed
The best thing to do is to go a check out the CHANGES.txt and see for yourself how many bug fixes there are since the last released version. Phew!

Another majorly important thing is that I am now abandoning this zope.org page in favour of my own hosted site: www.IssueTrackerProduct.com

It will shortly have a news RSS feed and some other fancy things. I will keep posting news about major releases here on zope.org.

Now, without further ado please go and download it
