adapt the way how new and changed content is presented to zope.org visitors

Problem

Zope.org is experienced as a static collection of Zope related content and as a software/product repository.

  • on frontpage only general/zope.inc news and product releases are displayed
  • wiki changes are accessible through wiki only
  • created/changed information of user content is not available in a usefull way through search or customized listings
    • example: 'Zope How-Tos': latest additions in March 2004
  • categorization of content through Subjects is not visible in search/listings
  • changes in zope.org documents are not displayed. creation, modification times and author infos are - in part - visible in folder_contents, but missing from the 'view'-templates
  • userfeedback/commenting is not a general option. users start gathering anywhere they see a chance to speak up. examples:

Proposal

The visitor of the website experiences zope.org as driven by user-contributions, evolving over time. Add a new layer of access: information is available by time, state, type and subject. Besides that zope.org stays as it is, a document/software repository, available through folder structure and catalog queries.

conceptual prototype: weblog software

The website should adept concepts and methods of weblog software and add them to the overall information-strategy of zope.org. If weblog-style presentation is used or not is beyond this proposal.

  • new, modified and commented user content (news, documentation, product release) is displayed on the frontpage and on the respective area head-pages.
  • time, state, type and subject information (metadata) is used to create the listings.
  • any listing is also available as separate rss-feed
  • this will not affect the overall design of zope.org document storage
  • possible addition: support for user weblogs and weblog-management
  • possible addition: user defined/customized rss-feeds
